One would think that West Ham and David Sullivan’s long-standing relationship with Will Salthouse might have helped the club in their attempts to sign Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey.
After all, with the Unique Sports boss known to be ‘friendly’ with the Sullivans, it’d be reassuring to know we’re not just being fed cast-offs, injury-prone veterans, or free transfers from the agency’s bargain bin.
To be fair, while Callum Wilson feels like something plucked from the reduced aisle, Aaron Wan-Bissaka—also a Salthouse client—was certainly a cut above, more in the ‘Finest’ range.
I genuinely hope Wilson proves me wrong and shines in claret and blue, but the suspicion remains: Would we have signed him under any other agent?
Graham Potter is known to be keen to add a dynamic midfielder to his squad, and Ramsey ticks all the right boxes. He even scored for Villa in pre-season yesterday, which has only fuelled speculation that he’s unsure about a move to the London Stadium.
This is where Salthouse should come in, right? Surely the benefit of West Ham’s ‘special relationship’ with Unique Sports is to help get these kinds of deals over the line.
If we can’t even secure the best of the Salthouse clients, then one has to ask—what’s the point in the relationship at all?
Because if all we’re getting is the leftovers, West Ham might want to reconsider what exactly we’re signing up for.
Remember reading recently,Ramsey not interested in joining West Ham.Why would he when he looks at the recruitment shambles .A young player on the fringe of the international squad has higher ambitions.
Yes although in the defence of the relationship, I believe we did get AWB via that route, one of the best deals of recent years. Ramsey is the type of player we need but unless Sullivan is about to surprise us all and invest a few quid, we really can’t afford him. That might change if we go for the cheaper keeper and manage to sell Alvarez for reasonable money, but then what’s the point if he doesn’t want to come here anyway. All very frustrating as I think we would be in good shape with just a couple of good signings now.

JJ has told me that he’s not leaving VP unless the club wants him to leave which he says is the opposite of the conversation he had the Unai, Monchi and Damon. Obviously every player has a price but it’s definitely way above £40m, so I suggest WH look else where and stop wasting your time, ala Duran.

Ramsay is underwhelming. Not worth £40m of anybody’s money.
This window has been all about savage financial cuts and a refusal to spend more than the bare minimum on recruitment. A small fortune has been shaved off the wage bill by allowing every single out of contract player to leave, whilst additions have been negligible. The owners reluctance to invest, despite relegation threats is screaming something else to me.
Is the club being sold off?
I can honestly see no other reason for the penny pinching other than to make the club more attractive to a buyer, while money spent would be money lost to the current owners. There may be nobody lined up, but there is surely something in the wind to explain the owners risky strategy.
Won’t be more attractive by risking our PL status either poor player investment
