What a Difference a Year Makes for Lopetegui

Last season, West ham gaffer Julen Lopetegui walked out on Wolverhampton Wanderers, citing a lack of backing in the transfer window.

Fast forward twelve months, and it’s very much a case of ‘what a difference a year makes,’ as the Spaniard has seen his squad completely overhauled.

At the beginning of the season, I speculated that West Ham would need to bring in eight players, but I didn’t believe it would be possible. David Moyes was still in charge of the Hammers at the time, and I had little faith that he would be quick and nimble enough in the transfer window or allow Tim Steidten enough slack to get the deals done quickly.

Yet here we are, about to kick off our third Premier League game of the season against Manchester City, having recruited nine players, which is incredible.

Lopetegui has been fully backed and now has a formidable squad from which to create his vision for the club. So well done, one and all, for an incredibly successful and exciting transfer window where the Hammers looked competent and, at times, ahead of our rivals.

Over to you, J-Lo.

Certainly was a refreshing change. Well done to Tim and everyone else involved and thanks for keeping us up to date with the latest developments Gonzo and the rest of the team. I am the most optimistic I have been for a while about the season ahead. My only doubts are left back, Ollie Scarles? Also maybe a pacey striker. Soler should knit the team together better so COYI.

    • Gonzo says:

      No worries at all Ray.

I agree regarding the striker, it would have been the icing on the cake although it wouldn’t surprise me if Loppy uses Bowen more.

  • Tom says:

And he will still start soucek and coufal

You had an article on Reiss Nelson joining potentially from Arsenal after he’d signed for Fulham. This was widely available news online, yet ‘missed’ by you.

So presumably to save embarrassment you simply deleted the item. V.poor form just to pretend an article didn’t exist. Presumably you were relying on the fact that being early in the morning nobody would have seen it?

Not the first time things have ‘gone missing’ either. It’s all a little Big Brother for my liking and this site is dropping further in my estimation with every passing week.

If you get an item wrong, leave it, have the balls to explain and salvage a little credibility.

    Embarrassing…….again.

If you dont like things on here, why just pi&& off? You won’t be missed.

      • John says:

Sorry gonzos mum!!! pb61 you brown nose melt!

        • Gonzo says:

John, if you can’t post about West Ham and just come on to insult other posters, there really is no point. This is not the place to take out your anger or irritation.

Just do it on social media like everyone else.

    • Gonzo says:

I deleted it Whippet, the article was incorrect so I removed it and it was totally my call to do so.

However, your insinuations of conspiracy or whatever else you’re alluding to are wide of the mark, it was an honest mistake but I like to think we got most things correct.

What has become clear is that you are becoming tired with the website and in some instances rude. I don’t think either of us benefit from you reading and commenting so perhaps try one of the many other West Ham outlets. . . you’re too spoilt for choice to constantly return to a website you no longer enjoy. Life is too short.

      Good luck.

Just to say, wouldn’t at all be surprised to see my comment going East either, wouldn’t be the first time.

  • Dutch Courage says:

I do share your optimism Gonzo but it is slightly tinged with uneasiness. I’m a bit concerned about yesterday’s business all being loans. The 3 outgoings really could come back to bite us in a big way if those players don’t perform at their new clubs (I gather there’s no option/obligation to buy). Similarly with Soler, it’s a bit of a catch 22; if he does well PSG will surely ask silly money for him next year.

Another problem is the strikers; a position we all wanted sorted once and for all, can at best be described as a stop gap solution. I really like Fullkrug and hope he’s a success but the have niggling doubts relying on a player probably past his prime. The remaining backup options of Antonio and Ings don’t fill me with any confidence at all.

    • Gonzo says:

I know what you’re saying mate, but I think the three players you’re alluding to (Cornet, Aguerd & Ward Prowse) had already depreciated in value to varying degrees.

If Forest stay up we could find ourselves with a Flynn Downes situation and hopefully get close to £20m back. Aguerd is less certain but I suspect he’ll do better in Spain than England.

As for Cornet. . . I think we’ve lost £17m at this point so any increase is a bonus.

  • Phil McDonald says:

Loppy will need some time to put it all together so let’s give him some. What is getting my goat already is seeing gripes about Fulkrug, having played a few minutes. It’s like some need a new target now Coufal probably won’t start much. It’s Loppy’s responsibility to play to his strengths in a way that Moyes never did for a bagful of strikers. I’m sure he will. Great for Casey to be 4th CB out of the blue. COYI.

    • Gonzo says:

I think the Fullkrug stuff was more out of frustration Phil. We had waited for him to get a start and he was isolated.

If Loppy can get Bowen next to him on a regular basis then we’ll probably see more of what he can do.

  • Chris says:

I agree Whippet , the site has become quantity over quality lets have fewer posts with more thought !

  • John Ayris says:

Steidten has worked absolute wonders in the last two Summer windows, his performance has been just staggering.

It’s now down to what Lopetegui can do with the talent. Alvarez, Kudus, Mavropanos, Wan Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Rodriguez, Soler, Summerville, Fulkrug, the best part of a complete team.

Steidten is our best signing in I have no idea how long.

    • Gonzo says:

Afternoon John, you’re right, Tim has totally revolutionised the recruitment to the point that it’s unrecognisable.
