Why Emerson Should Follow Soler Out in Summer Reshuffle

With news that West Ham will be having a bit of a transfer cull during the summer to free up the wage bill, attention is beginning to focus on who will face the dreaded chop.

Based on yesterday’s performance, there are multiple candidates, but anyone can have an off day, and it would be foolish to dwell too much on who struggled in the Hammers’ 1-0 loss to Brentford.

That said, West Ham left-back Emerson’s display against the Bees was not an anomaly – it reflects how he has performed for almost a year.

Of course, there have been fleeting glimpses of his best this season, but realistically, Emerson was at his peak in the early part of last season. His link-up play with best mate Lucas Paquetá on the left flank produced some stunning performances alongside a player with whom he had a wonderful understanding.

Unfortunately, those days are long gone, and the player we have now is performing well below par and getting substituted in every game. His failure to win a 50/50 header against Bryan Mbeumo in yesterday’s defeat showed an unwillingness to put his head where it hurts.

Ollie Scarles replaced Emerson as a second-half substitute and was much better than the Brazilian-born Italian international.

With Juventus understood to be interested in signing him, it should be relatively straightforward to get the left-back off the wage bill. Emerson has been a good signing for the club, and the £13 million paid to Chelsea for his services has represented good value.

However, he remains one of the bigger earners in a squad that needs rejuvenating, and therefore, I’d be very surprised to see him remain at the club beyond this season

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

I started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

I give West Ham opinions and interviews on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus. Former video and content creator for West Ham United back in the days of Upton Park. I was lucky enough to feature in the documentary broadcast on that final wonderful game at the Boleyn when Winston Reid broke Manchester United hearts.

I frequently feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

    Sounds like groundhog day again?
It was probably this time last year that we were talking about bringing in a load of new signings and getting rid of the deadwood. So fastrack to now and we are talking about getting rid of a lot of those signings we bought last summer.
Only Summerville and Wan-Bissaka imo have been good signings so we need to get it right this time instead of keep getting it wrong..If we don’t we could easy be looking at relegation next season.

Interesting comment there ‘anyone can have an off day’ 😂 looking at where we are in the league and the level of performance that we’ve seen all season,I would suggest those off days are a weekly occurrence.
The quicker we can get 4 more wins on the board the better, then we can close the door on this turgid season and start preparing for next season.
This really has been an awful season right from the off and il be glad to see the back off it.
A massive rebuild is needed in the Summer, try and get as much as we can for Kudus who has been absolutely shocking all season long, then the rebuild begins with a new keeper, new defense, new midfielders and new attackers 😂😂 not much to do there then

Emerson appears to already have one foot out the door?

I’m not sure Soler deserves to be following him.
Depending on £cost, & if Potter see’s him as a fit for his system, Soler could be a star IMHO.

Shame he was good for a while hopefully he can get back to his best for the test of the season .

Emerson is similar to Paqueta. Occasionally brilliance but mostly average. Hes seen better days. Thank him for the past but time to move on.

Although I suppose he would be a decent back up to Scarles moving forward. Time for Cresswell to retire or go.

Couldn’t agree more. We get fleeting glimpses of promise – then another poor performance: & then another. I don’t think that we can afford any more time in the hope of a sustained improvement. It doesn’t appear that it will happen. Scarles is raw , shows a lot of promise & must be introduced gradually; but at this stage he appears to be Emerson’s successor – & an improvement, at that.
