Will Hammers break their cup duck?

|

Only at West Ham would we struggle to win a cup we invented with our solitary win coming as a result of a penalty shoot-out.

The inaugural tournament was held in 2015 at West Ham’s previous home the Boleyn Ground, with the second tournament taking place at the London Stadium in 2016.

The Hammers have only won the Betway Cup once on penalties over the past six years.

2015  West Ham 1 Werder Bremen 2  (Boleyn Ground)

2016 West Ham 2 v Juventus 3  (London Stadium)

2017 Werder Breman 3 v West Ham 2 (Played in Germany)

2018 Mainz 1 v West Ham 1 (West Ham win 7-6 on penalties)

2019 West Ham  2 v  Athletic Bilbao 2 (West Ham lost (2-4 on penalties)

2020 West Ham 3 v AFC Bournemouth 5 (London Stadium without fans present)
West Ham United will host Atalanta in the Betway Cup this fternoon at 3 pm at the London Stadium hoping to win it for the first time in normal time.
The Champions League club will be no pushover but like normal this essentially remains a pre-season friendly so is unlikely to be played at the pace or passion of a Premier League cup.

Frankly, it doesn’t matter if West Ham lose. It’s a meaningless trophy with only the sponsor who are set to gain from it. However, theBB warm up fixture is useful against any top tier European league from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, Belgium or the Netherlands.
