Keith Wyness, former chief exec at Aberdeen, Aston Villa and Everton, has said West Ham are likely to lose Crysencio Summerville this summer if they’re relegated. According to famed journalist Fabrizio “Here we go!” Romano, the Hammers already rejected two approaches (one from England and another in Italy) in the January window.
After initially lacking the end product, Summerville has been called West Ham’s most improved player this season. Following the FA Cup match against Burton, Summerville said he’s “in a good space lately” and happy to be back playing after his injury.
Thanks to Summerville’s improved form, West Ham have a better chance of staying in the Premier League. But will he stick around if they go down, and is his goalscoring record enough to convince other clubs to splash the cash?
Summerville’s end product
Summerville’s 95th-minute winner against Burton was his sixth goal in seven games. Before that, his previous six goals were spread across 56 club games (five for Leeds and one for the Hammers). In his last season at Leeds, he scored 21 goals on the way to the Championship play-off final.
A serious hamstring problem sidelined Summerville for seven months and his first season at the Hammers was not what they’d hoped for. Just one goal in 22 appearances, followed by none in his first 16 games this season, had some pundits questioning his output. But now Summerville looks more like the player he did under Daniel Farke at Leeds.
Summerville has only one assist this season. But he wasn’t the only one struggling for goals or assists. Jarrod Bowen has done well considering the circumstances; his eight goals put him alongside Premier League players like Ollie Watkins, Danny Welbeck and Morgan Rogers who have often received more plaudits. According to Opta, West Ham have no players inside the top 20 for expected goals in 2025-26. Bowen is 24th with a similar xG to players like Benjamin Sesko, Harvey Barnes, and, oddly enough, Mohamed Salah in the Egyptian’s worst season since joining Liverpool.
Despite Summerville’s lack of goals until late, he has been linked with Roma and Tottenham. West Ham will want to keep him. Nuno Espirito Santo has said when Summerville is one-on-one against a defender, “he is almost unstoppable.” Much, of course, will depend on whether West Ham can survive in the top flight this season. The current Premier League odds suggest Nuno’s team are most likely to be relegated along with Wolves and Burnley. West Ham are placed at 1.57 – 1.9 to finish in the bottom three. Nottingham Forest are at around 3.25 on most bookmakers, while Tottenham, Leeds, Crystal Palace, and Brighton are considered outside bets.
Summerville will be key to the Hammers’ chances of staying up. Nuno says his confidence has improved and everything he’s doing “seems to go well”.
Where would Summerville go?
If West Ham were to be relegated, Summerville may be tempted to leave, especially if he maintains this form until May. Romano says “several clubs” are interested. Spurs were said to have made an enquiry in January but that was when Thomas Frank was in charge. Reporters claimed that the Hammers valued the player at £25m – that has likely increased since Summerville’s golden spell. He has a contract until 2029 so won’t be cheap.
His goal against Burton was typical of his best football: receiving the ball wide, Summerville drove inside, sped past a defender, and curled the ball inside the far post. Clubs might not be the only ones fighting over him in the summer. Summerville is of Surinamese descent but can also play for the Netherlands, who he has represented at youth level.
