Window closed and more rotation options required

By Dave Langton

The transfer window might be over but a quick look at the squad list on the club’s website shows that there really isn’t that there remains a lack of depth in the squad right now.

Of course, Gianluca Scamacca has been ill, so we’ve been left with Mikey Antonio as the onw option up front, because the youngsters, such as Armstrong Okoflex, are out on loan.

And the same can be said in attacking midfield. The attacking midfield options are as follows: Lucas Paqueta, Manuel Lanzini, and Pablo Fornals. That’s the classic No.10 options.

On the left, you’ve got Said Benrahma and Maxwel Cornet. On the right? It’s just Jarrod Bowen as a specialist option.

It means that when we get into the Europa Conference League games, three of these six are going to be playing.

Add in the fact that the World Cup is coming up and you’ve got some problems. Paqueta is likely to go with Brazil, Lanzini could go with Argentina and Fornals with Spain, while Bowen could go with England. Neither Algeria or the Ivory Coast qualified, so Benrahma and Cornet will, at least, be staying.

The options are all good players, there’s no doubt about that, but one has to think we could do with at least two more players to be able to rotate through.

The January transfer window is going to be key and we’ve got to hope that scouting is already taking place, and targets are being identified.

  1. If you look at Maxwell Cornets playing statistics over his career though you’ll see he has played as many times on the right wing as he has on the left. He has also played many times up front as a striker. On top of that having played left back makes him a fantastic signing as he is mr versatile utility player.
