Not content with being linked with one Manchester United player this week, West Ham have now been mentioned alongside Harry Maguire.

Yes, the same player who supposedly came close to moving to the London Stadium on several occasions under David Moyes could be heading this way in the summer, according to breaking reports.

The £80m signing from Leicester City is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season, and there appears to be little appetite on either side to agree a new deal. Maguire turns 33 before the start of the next campaign, and much is likely to change at West Ham by then.

Ongoing Legal Complications

There is also the added complication of Maguire’s ongoing legal case in Greece.

The former England international was arrested in the summer of 2020 following a brawl while on holiday. He was convicted of assaulting a police officer and attempted bribery, receiving a 21-month suspended sentence. The conviction was automatically quashed on appeal under Greek law, but a retrial was ordered. That retrial has collapsed on three separate occasions, the most recent due to a lawyers’ strike.

Given that West Ham have just endured two years of legal uncertainty with Lucas Paquetá, one would assume there’s little appetite to sign a player with a trial hanging over his head.

The Hammers are undoubtedly looking for defensive reinforcements. The loan signing of Igor from Brighton Hove Albion was very much a hurried afterthought following Nayef Aguerd’s unplanned for departure. A central defender is likely to be high on the wanted list along with a striker and Maguire on a free will be of interest to most teams in the bottom half of the EPL.

He’s a liability if asked to do more than head the ball (which he IS good at).

    Not Maguire please
    Let’s buy for the future
We always look to buy players past their prime
I hope Nuno would be different
Let’s get Marshall in from the start against Brentford

Can’t see any problems with that, a solid international centre back for free.

It all looks good when one reads it in black and white but is it gonna really happen. i mean Nuno getting full control over who he brings in and ships out. it already sounds like that Sullivan has been in his ear reading about the Maquire thing ??? do we really need a 33 year old that can run ??? surely there’s decent good younger central defenders out there that are as good if not better than him. come on. 2 finish. i just hope he gets full control without any insiders putting there ores in. C O Y I ‘s and in Nuno we trust.

    Cheers Paul.

Why are you even talking about yet another pensioner as if he would be an asset to West Ham? That is not development or rebuilding, it is just kicking the can down the road and ensuring we still have soap opera material to talk about next year. Give it a rest and try coming up with something valuable to discuss.

Who the hell do you think you are Ray? “Give it a rest and try coming up with something valuable to discuss.” That is incredibly rude and I suspect not the way you speak to people in person.
