“You Must be Kidding” | Board Source Hints at Two Years of Lopetegui

West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui finds himself facing mounting pressure at the London Stadium, but well connected journalist David Ornstein from The Athletic has reported that our board remain hopeful for a turnaround rather than rushing to make a change.

Ornstein is known for his reliable sources within the club, hinted that perhaps Lopetegui is under slightly less immediate threat than some might think. However, with an increasing wave of frustration from Irons supporters, the club’s reputation for honouring managerial contracts might not be what everyone wants to hear at this point. Results are expected, and while the Hammers’ leadership would rather stick with Lopetegui, patience may be running thin if things don’t improve.

Ornstein’s comments seem to be somewhat diluted from the rhetoric of two days ago and they’re not entirely inline with what C&H have been told. Lopetegui, now 58, still has 19 months left on his current deal, but it’s hard to envision our owners fully honouring that contract without signs of swift progress. Our current position—14th in the Premier League—reflects a disappointing start under Lopetegui, a stark contrast to the ambitious summer signings that were meant to elevate us.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home against Everton highlighted the ongoing issues and certainly seemed like two points lost. Facing Sean Dyche’s side at the London Stadium, our team was matched by one of the worst outfits in the EPL and we were lucky not to have faced any of the teams placed above us. As the international break approaches, Lopetegui now has a crucial window to reassess and refocus his Hammers squad but it ain’t going to be easy.

Ornstein shared on Threads, “West Ham are disappointed with results but prefer to honour contracts, hoping for change. There’s pressure not only on Lopetegui but also on Tim Steidten, who recruited him and oversaw summer signings. It’s delicate, but he stays for now.”

Good luck selling season tickets or renewals if JLo keeps his job for next season! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  • Jez says:

    Simple ,Sullivan
is a massive bell end, he made this appointment, so he won’t give it up easily, when we get hammered at Newcastle the fans should boycott our next home game against arsenal, only then will he get the message ,Fan Power

  • John Ayris says:

I can see definite defeats at Newcastle and at home to Arsenal, it would be a miracle after what we’ve seen if that’s not the case. On the other side of that there may be absolutely no option but to twist. I simply do not see any improvements anywhere while the situation seems to be souring.

The Arsenal game is live on Sky Sports. Instead of booing when we get smashed, 60,000 fans shouting for him to go will surely be the end of this disaster?!

  • Mark says:

Think it’s time the fans started to turn on the board it’s the only way sullivan will listen if the anger is directed against him.

  • mark wiggins says:

No way , he should be sacked now , Sullivan can take all the blame if he keeps him on!

  • Smyth says:

Loppy came in with his new broom, and swept away all of the existing setup.. We only needed a few quality additions and a change of style. Absolute garbage now. It wasn’t broken but he mended it. Including the staff -.Nolan etc. Disgusting the way they removed David Moyes.

  • Iain Rolles says:

    it was0-0 against Everton

The result was 0-0. If you can’t get the basics right how are we supposed to believe anything else you have written

  • Neil Down Under says:

Awesome, I’ll take hope over obvious facts and statistics. I too hope it’ll come good.
Lessons of history aren’t worth learning either.

All my snidely cynicism aside I really want things to come good, and yes, the coach should be given a fair shake of the sauce bottle.
Just don’t leave it until we’re 3rd from bottom with 8 games to go before pulling the trigger.

    • Alan says:

Dropping into the bottom three is likely the point they can sack without having to pay a huge amount of compensation. So I fully expect that to be the case.

If it carries on as is and we trundle along in and around 12th -15th, but avoid any imminent danger of going down, then I would fully expect that we’re stuck with him.

  • Andy says:

We drew 0-0 with Everton !

  • Kenny Irons says:

Employ a decent manager then honour the contract. The inability of the board to employ a manager who knows his stuff is the main worry. They have massively cocked up again by employing Lopetegui, and despite the comment of honouring his contract to try and cover their own incompetence, their hand will be forced because staying with this clown will mean we’ll be in the bottom three come Christmas 👎

Martin, you must be working too hard! Try and get a bit more sleep or even do what JLo has done – take a holiday. And I don’t say that to be nasty because you are one of the better writers among the West Ham fansites. Of course, like the others, I am referring to your reference to the 1-1 draw with Everton. I wish it had been 1-1 because at least we would have had a goal to cheer about. It must have been in your dreams but they are supposed to fade and die!

    • Basvegas says:

As much as I expect Martin rocking up at PC World to replace his over worked laptop fairly soon, it was Andy behind this article, but still 1-1 sounds a better game than the snorefest I personally witnessed last weekend that’s for sure.

      • Hammeroo says:

Oops, I did it again! Maybe it’s me that needs to get more sleep because that’s the second time I’ve addressed the wrong author in as many days. Thanks, Basvegas, for correcting me. I must remember to look carefully at the top and bottom of each article to see who the author is.

  • Hendo says:

Its rumoured that many EPL players have “relegation clauses” in which they will either be sold or receive a drastic pay cut if their team goes down to the Championship.

Does anyone know if some managers have penalty clauses such as no severance pay if they promise to improve team performance when they are interviewed but then don’t deliver on their promise especially after being heavily backed in the transfer market?

    • Bennyboy baker says:

JL has got to go I really can’t stand the thought of watching another game with JL in charge he has no idea how to set a team up he has no style or any Tatics and the apart from Sullivan most players/fans and top pundits know he’s got to go a contact has to work both ways the club has kept their part of the contract but JL has not and has the front to say he can’t work with the players he has at his disposal the fault is clearly down to him he has a talented squad that most managers would love to have available to them as far as I am concerned JL is a complete waste of space who doesn’t have a clue what he is doing

  • West Ham Voice says:

I just have fallen asleep with boredom as I don’t remember either team scoring

  • Martin B says:

Saturday’s 1-1 draw was actually 0-0 , do you even watch us play lol

  • Andy Stone says:

    1-1 result? Seriously?
The claim that we have him for the duration of his contract but no longer? An admission that he is a failure or we’d be looking beyond.
If this is the case I’ll be back at the end of the contract. The boards prerogative in keeping Lopetegui and my prerogative in finding more interest in other sporting options, my prerogative.
