The paring down of West Ham United’s senior squad continue at pace. Several of those who were showcased and examined during pre season who have not been found wanting are off now on season long loans.
Such is the case with Academy starlet Freddie Potts who impressed Lopetegui during preseason appearances and looked capable of easily handling a step into Championship football: Whilst his West Ham United ‘parent’ club have decided the Premier League is a step too far, it is hoped that a season for Freddie at Championship side Portsmouth.
According to Sky Sports Reporter Mark McAdam Potts is just about ready to put pen to paper and sign any day for a season at Fratton Park. Contracted as a Hammer since 2021, Freddie’s contract at London Stadium runs until 2026, plenty of time for him to break into the seniors. One more year, we think…
In any case, the Championship will be a big step forward for 20 year old local lad Potts, from Barking, who spent last season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, making 30 starts and scoring twice for the Buckinghamshire club oddly known as ‘The Chairboys’. Somebody tell me why?
We look forward to bringing you news of Freddie’s progress during the season.
High Wycombe was a major furniture manufacturing town with companies such as Ercol being based there.
👍
Freddie was Wycombe’s player of the season last year
Wycombe was the centre of the chair making industry
Good luck Pottsy Jnr!
In my ideal world he was lining up alongside Edson in the starting XI this season for at least a good few games, but fingers crossed an injury free run in the Championship against some very good quality players will be just what he needs instead of jumping in at the deep end of the Prem.
Potts, Orford, Casey, Kodua, Marshall, Hegyi, Laing, Earthy, Scarles all on the fringes of making a breakthrough with a queue behind them. Exciting times for young hopefuls.
I think that Freddie Potts is destined for our first team like his dad who was a real favourite of mine. Good that his development is being managed very well, a brilliant season in League 1 and now the Championship.
It is good that we have been more careful with our choice of loan clubs for our Academy boys after Callum’s disastrous spell at WBA last term. The boys must play.
They are called the chairmakers because the Chiltern Hills and High Wycombe in particular was once well known for the making of furniture. Makers of chair legs worked in the woods and supplied the industry. They were called ‘bodgers’. Probably not a good nickname for a team!
High Wycombe was the centre of the furniture trade for many years due to local beech wood availability. Colloquially also known as ‘The bodgers’ (which was actually chair repairman rather than manufacturer).
