Ollie Scarles impressed as West Ham U21s suffered a 1-0 defeat to Newport County in the EFL Trophy. The Hammers were desperate for a win in the Bristol Street Motors group stage, having already lost both of their opening games.
The young Hammers side was unlucky not to come away with something from the game, with several players performing well, particularly after halftime. Kamarai Simon-Swyer had an open goal after rounding the Newport goalkeeper, but his shot was cleared off the line.
Scarles—who recently signed a new deal with the Hammers—almost scored a wonder goal as he slalomed through multiple challenges and came close again later in the second half.
Unfortunately, it was not to be for West Ham as Oliver Greaves scored a tap-in following good work from Newport.
The young Irons now sit bottom of Group P and look unlikely to progress further.
