West Ham’s talks with Paris Saint-Germain over the signing of midfielder Carlos Soler are understood to have progressed well, with all parties eager to finalise the deal.

The former Valencia midfielder is believed to have agreed to join the Hammers some days ago, responding positively to direct contact from fellow Basque compatriot Julen Lopetegui.

There had been a gentleman’s agreement that Soler would join the Irons after the club completed certain sales. However, the delay in Kurt Zouma’s transfer to the UAE, coupled with a lack of offers for fringe players, forced a rethink of the transfer strategy.

Saturday’s Premier League loss to Aston Villa may have prompted Lopetegui to urge the club to expedite the transfer, resulting in the loan-to-buy agreement now in place.

There is still some work to be done between the parties, but given recent transactions between the two clubs for Alphonse Areola and Thilo Kehrer, it’s unlikely any significant issues will arise.

If at the end of the window Zouma and Ings are still here I suspect a deal will be done to terminate their contracts and the Soler deal will go through anyway, PSG are the Man Utd of France difficult to buy players from as numerous clubs including our own have found.in recent years. Given how weak we were at defending that corner and the fact that Todibo rarely wins headers if his stats are to be believed will be curious to see how Lopetegui mitigates for that, will it be by having Fullkrug in the team or will it be by playing a 3 man central defence ?
