ClaretandHugh forum member Keith Escott – responding to Bobby Moore Day-  makes such a brilliant point that he deserves a post of his own.

It was on September 8, 1958 that Bobby made his debut in the claret and blue at the age of 17.

Later this week a new book ‘Bobby Moore – the man in full” is published …the legend goes on and on!

Responding to a tribute piece on the site from Billy Bonds Keith writes : “Bonzo is, of course, spot on.

“Shame that the perceived ‘failings’ being brought to the fore in the new biography of Bobby are being seen through today’s morality.

“Back in the day it was regular behaviour among footballers and men from the East End.

“I prefer to remember the outstanding defender, immaculate role model for children in the 60s, someone who came to terms with having cancer and beating it in an era when it was seen as an automatic death sentence.

“Was he perfect? No. But that’s what makes his achievements all the greater, because deep down he was just like the rest of us.”

There will be no finer tribute this week!
