However, Richards – who is in the last year of his City deal – is currently earning around £70k a week and the Irons will need to organise a wage sharing deal if it is to happen.
Much will depend on the outcome of James Tomkins with hopes rising today his hamstring injury may not be as bad as at first feared.
Richards, however is seen as a great addition and could be brought in on a three or six month deal which will suit the Hammers wages position.
A source told ClaretandHugh exclusively: “The problem from City’s point of view is that if they loan him it will be difficult for them to get a fee for him given he’s in the last year of his deal
“We do not think City will subsidise his wage, but we have asked and there have been talks.”
