DG: Downing shows the Devonshire style

Stewart Downing’s emergence from the shadows has David Gold describing the 20 year old as ” a new Hammers player.”

And the co-chairman believes the player typifies everything that is happening at the club this season declaring: “Everything is changing, getting better.”

And Gold  is deeply unimpressed by those who want to take the gloss off the performance by QPR declaring the west Londoners were a poor side.

Sky pundit Gary Neville of course went much further calling Harry Redknapp’s side “diabolical.”

But Gold said: “However poor a team may appear the job still has to be done and this was one of those games where in the past we may have drawn or got beaten.

“We were on top all the way though apart from 10 minutes at the start of the second half and with injuries we also showed the depth and spread of the squad so it was an important afternoon.”

Downing, meanwhile remains the revelation for Gold who said: “We bought him as a winger to supply an aerial supply line for Andy Carroll but he is now showing so much midfield class and style.

“He starts to look and feel like an Alan Devonshire” (lower right). Playing in that diamond is superb for him and with so much pace and movement going on in the team he can pick out exactly the right  pass.

“I am very excited by what I’m seeing although aware there it is a very long season.”
