HAMMERS HEAD FOR QUIET JANUARY

West Ham are unlikely to be adding to the current squad in the January transfer window unless injuries intervene.

And that could be the first time in nearly 20 years as owners of first Birmingham City and now the Irons that David Sullivan and David Gold haven’t had a little dip in the transfer market in midwinter.

The boardroom view is that the critical work done during the summer has set the club up for two or three years with only the central defensive position to be addressed.

But even that can wait until next summer if necessary should Winston Reid decide to turn down the new deal on offer.

A well placed source said:  “We have plenty of targets in mind should Winston  turn us down. He can do what he likes when his contract runs down but we are still very keen for him to stay with us.

“However, there will be no need to rush into the January market which is always over inflated and only a place to go shopping when things are desperate.

“We are very well placed at the moment and unless injuries intervene there doesn’t look a great or urgent need to add players at this stage.”
