Winston Reid’s return to training on Thursday will also signal the re-commencement of talks between the central defender and the club over a new contract .

And there’s a new mood of optimism inside the Boleyn that a deal which would see the Kiwi commit to another three or four years at the club can be done.

With just a year left on his current contract the Hammers are keen to put another in place.

And the signs are that the £75k a week wage demands allegedly put down by the player’s advisers initially will be moderated.

A source told ClaretandHugh: “The club are keen to get this sorted out as soon as possible and from what I’ve seen and heard there’s more room for optimism.

“There have been no inquiries for Winston and thus the club’s bargaining position becomes a lot stronger.

“It’s unlikely Winston will get anymore than the Hammers are likely to put on the table from any club outside of the top six and none of those have come in.”
