David Gold believes it will do Andy Carroll the world of good to know that he has some pretty fierce competition around when he is fit to return to action.

So much hope and expectation was piled on the striker’s shoulder last season that West Ham were at times a one man team – that is clearly no longer the case.

With Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho looking a really strong partnership in the making, the return of AC is not as urgent perhaps as it was 12 months ago.

The board are clearly delighted with their summer signings and although Valencia’s goals grabbed all the Monday night headlines, Sakho is set to have a real impact.

Gold said – speaking exclusively to ClaretandHugh : “Sakho has a great attitude and is delighted to get his chance with his us. The boy works his socks off up front and looks a find.

“Enner is our marquee signing of course and looks a real handful so obviously there will be a lot of competition for places when AC is back.

“He will thrive on that – the boy is a total professional and will know that a situation such as this ios great for the future of the football club.

“Andy is keen to get his international place back and that means getting his West Ham place nailed down and it will be great that he has the competition around to get the very best from him.”
