Sam chose not to go into details about how the injury claiming: “I can’t medically go into any details from a legal point of view, but I can say the injury occurred not by playing or training.”

We can confirm again however, the injury occurred whilst Sakho was being treated for a mild back problem.

And on the possibility of sending medical staff with the pair, should they join the African Nations Cup squad, he added: “I think we would like to send people out there, but it is a manpower thing in terms of what we can put together without leaving ourselves too short back here,” he said.

“If I had my choice I would like to do it, but I don’t think we have enough staff to cover the African Nations and our needs during a hectic period back here in January.

“But we are considering it and I am talking to my head of medical about it.”
