West Ham’s excursion into Iceland for what was billed “The Super Match” on Friday afternoon earned the club very little in terms of international recognition or encouragement on the pitch for he new season.

ClaretandHugh understands  the clash against Manchester City earned the Irons around £500k which would barely buy a League Two striker.

Still you take it where you can get it but in terms of what the corporate bosses love to call ‘brand awareness’ the game would have done little to bring the club before a new audience.

Iceland has a strong Hammers fan base anyway and with the game being restricted to Eurosport 1 and Player, it meant little in attracting a new audience anyway.

The club are likely to earn far more from the Mexican market with the arrival of Javier Hernandez and have already shown their determination to exploit that  by showing a Spanish speaking only interview with the striker on the official website.
