A plan to fund and erect a statue of Bobby Moore in his birth town of Barking is failing to attract backers to make the project a reality.

A crowd funding page was launched six months ago by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham but has only managed to attract just 2% (£2,712) of pledges from a target of £167,531 need to commission the statue.

Two generous backers have given £1,000 each meaning the remaining £712 have come from 37 other smaller backers.

The project organisers say “We propose to commission the “people’s statue” – a monument to stand at the gateway to the town where Bobby was born. As Russell Brand says in the soon to be released film, Bo66y –The Movie, “Some are knighted by monarchs. Others are knighted by the people.” Bobby or Sir Bobby as he is often referred to falls in to that category and that is why we are passionate about honouring his achievement. Please support our bid.”

There is only 61 days remaining for the fund raising project after which all pledges will be returned if the target of £167,531 is not met!
