Carroll, after another hugely lengthy lay off since pre-season, made his first ‘proper’ first team return with a cameo against Cardiff City on Tuesday evening.
But the boss has now declared the striker has to said the front man has to be able to showhis best form week by week.
AC’s current contract ends in the summer and although the club could trigger an option – should the player want to – it seems more likely that they will offer a new contract with a reduced wage.
There has also been speculation the player may be looking for a move abroad with the USA his favoured destination but at 29 years old that looks unlikely.
In the meantime Pellegrini has been outlining what the player has to do should he choose he wants to remain at the Hammers.
He said: “When you need to renew your contract, of course you must demonstrate why you need to renew. We know what Andy can give to our team, now he must demonstrate he is able to do it week by week.”He has now the last six months, and I hope that he will be able to do it. For the moment, he can be a very important substitute.

“We know what he can give to our team, the other day in 15 minutes, he had two or three shots, headers.

“All the other defenders must be worried if they see Andy near the box, he can give a lot of important things to our team.”
