Cancelling Carroll’s contract achieves absolutely nothing

Andy Carroll’s incredible injury woes have again given rise to the cry among many for his contract to be cancelled!

It’s a natural emotional knee jerk reaction with people fed up that he is never available and he doesn’t help himself when saying things like: “I hope I get a full pre-season ” following the game in Switzerland against Winteruhr.

That simply doesn’t wash given that we now learn from the official site that he apparently remains uncomfortable with his ankle problem for which he underwent what everybody believed was successful surgery.

Now it seems that was an illusion, that he will be missing for three months minimum. Thus the “cancel his contract” shouts have started from the totally fed up!.

But here’s the simple truth surely: Doing so would achieve absolutely nothing.

There remains the chance that he will be fit to return by Christmas, come off the bench, score some goals and make some sort of impact before we finally – and it has to be said,  happily – see him disappear into the sunset this time next year.

Carroll is on around £3.5 million a year and were the club to attempt cancelling his deal they would probably want him to take about half of that.

But truth is he has no need to accept and any attempt – which hardly seems worthwhile anyway – would fail and achieve nothing even were it to happen for some bizarre reason.

Whatever the reasons for his continuing injury problems, whatever his state of mind contract cancellation goes nowhere and achieves nothing.

We have lived with this one since Allerdici made him his must have player all those years ago and we are simply gonna have to swallow it for another nine months.
