CandH Exclusive by Hughie Southon

Nayef Aguerd could be out of action for as long as three months following surgery on his ankle on Monday.

The £30 million signing injured himself whilst making a retrieving tackle after losing possession in the game against Glasgow Rangers.

Initially it was believed the issue was relatively minor and the club today announced that he has received successful surgery without explaining the extent of the problem.

However, ClaretandHugh can reveal that the player has torn his ankle ligaments after talking to key contacts inside the club.

It means that the Hammers will start the season with the  central defenders with which they finished the last – Kurt Zouma. Craig Dawson and Issa Diop along with the now fully recovered Angelo Ogbonna.

Aguerd had become the marquee signing of the summer but we were told tonight that he could even be missing until November.

A  key source said: “It looks like three months – the surgery involved repairing torn ligaments and he will continue his recovery at Rush Green under our medics.”
