Chelsea linked with late move for Ogbonna

The Daily Express is recycling a rumour this morning that Chelsea will make a late bid for Angelo Ogbonna. They repeat report from Italian journalist  Gianluca Di Marzio who claims Chelsea are ready to make a request to West Ham over Ogbonna in the coming hours.

The report says “Conte is a fan of the centre-half who impressed in his debut season in the Premier League under Slaven Bilic. The Hammers are expected to try and fend off late interest from their London rivals though, and Chelsea have lined up a back-up plan.”  (That backup plan is thought to be David Luiz)

We give this rumour a very low rating, why would Chelsea wait until transfer deadline day to move their move when we would have little time to find a quality centre back replacement? The West Ham board would be extremely resistant to sell the player they bought from Juventus last season for £10m unless a fantastic over valuation bid in excess of £20m came in. Again I don’t see Chelsea doing that!

Conte is a big fan of Ogbonna without a doubt and they have worked together twice before but a transfer deal today is a step too far in my opinion and mostly speculation on the back of an interview Ogbonna gave about his admiration for Conte and what he can achieve at Chelsea.
