Club condemn anti semitic song as video emerges

West Ham United have issued the following statement:  “We are disgusted by the contents of the video circulating on social media on Saturday evening.We are taking immediate action to try to identify the offenders, whose details we will be handing over to the police and will be banned for life from London Stadium and from travelling with the Club. West Ham United is unequivocal in its stance – there is no place for this kind of behaviour at our Club.

“We do not want people like this associated with West Ham. They are not welcome at our Club, they are not welcome in civilised society.”

Michelle Richman posted the clip of the group chanting antisemitic songs online, saying that “as a football fan and the daughter of a holocaust survivor who spoke at your ground, I find this abhorrent in 2019”.

Her son, journalist Darren Richman had posted the same clip earlier adding: “sick of it”.

West Ham’s Met Police Officer Andy Sheldon added: ” I have just been made aware of a video circulating on social media, I will be working alongside West Ham, and Greater Manchester Police to investigate this incident and identify those involved,  Such a shame a small number of people tarnish the club and supporters reputation”

The video in question had been re-tweeted by Stan Collymore which shows unknown supporters on a train or bus singing a song about ‘Running around Tottenham…” with words that are anti-Semitic.  This song has traditionally been sung by West Ham supporters in the past often and often at away games.

Those found within the video singing the song are likely to face life bans from West Ham, a football banning order from the courts and a criminal record.

There is a common misconception that the song is acceptable id the last offensive two words are not sung by the supporter but this is incorrect and the whole song is regarded as anti-semitic and any supporter caught singing it on camera faces the real risk of the heavy consequences detailed above.
