Conor Coventry crowned a top performance with a fine goal on a night when he demonstrated he is ready to battle for a place in the first team.

Confident in everything he did , the academy star was the main man in midfield with Ben Johnson setting up his goal and scoring a fine effort of his own.

Johnson probably edged it as man of the match for me having provided two or three great crosses for Michail Antonio from which he could have expected to score.

The Hammers went ahead through an own goal by Dorsett from Bowen’s corner after 38 minuted before Coventry prodded home in the second half from Johnson’s low cross.

Then Johnson himself worked from the right back position across field  past three defenders before firing home.

Jarrod Bowen was a constant menace in the first half and was set up by one magnificent ball from Coventry but saw his shot saved as were two others.

The Hammers were in commanding mood all night and Safd Benrahma was in top form after appearing in the second period.

This was supposedly the squad’s toughest test so far but it didn’t look like it such was their confidence and composure.

Coventry received a huge smile from Kevin Nilan when he was subbed near the end with the Irons continuing to press and look a very confident squad at this stage.
