David Moyes would sanction Rice sale
The manager believes the sale of a star player can sometimes help a team re-invest to make the squad much better.
Speaking to the press on the subject a few weeks ago the gaffer says “If you are a star player, you want to play for the star teams. That is what happens – you lose your better players.
If you can recruit in the right way along that journey – I was always trying to bring in the new Wayne Rooney’s and Joleon Lescotts while keeping momentum. That is the idea, but everybody has got the same data and it is not easy.”
The 21-year-old England defensive midfielder has long been linked with a move away to a top six side but West Ham would let him go on the cheap and will expect a massive offer to come in to sell their prized asset.
Despite all of that it is great – and a tribute to his character that Declan has battled his guts out during this horrible season and continues to do so.
It’s almost a given that he will eventually move on thus joining the other Hammers stars who have become big players at big clubs.
Whether it’s a great idea for the manager to be discussing such a possibility at such a difficult time is questionable but at least it demonstrates a realism that most fans will instinctively feel anyway.
We have been told regularly that the Hammers consider him to be worth over £70 million but that valuation has increased to going on for £100 million given his performances in a season that has brought near despair.
