Decent start to summer BUT lots more required

So far so good!

Not many – wherever they find themselves in attitude towards the board – would argue that there’s been much wrong with the way business has been done so far this summer.

However, there’s a way to go before anybody should start going over the top about what sort of season lies ahead under the new manager.

The only certainty is that it will be a damned sight more attractive to watch than we have witnessed over the last two campaigns…but then that’s not hard is it?

Pellegrini is an advocate of the beautiful game and I have little doubt, as a result, we will soon be seeing a creative midfielder or two on board because such are key to the way the manager approach.

So far David Sullivan has pushed all three transfers – Fredericks, Diop and Fabianski – over the line as Director of Football, Mario Husillos has got his feet under the table.

From here on, however, it will be Husillos’ role to talk to agents, pursue targets and clinch deals …if that isn’t achievable via his own resources – no doubt Sullivan will enter stage right to bring on the final bit of pressure as was the case when Karren Brady was negotiating the London Stadium deal.

That’s the way it’s always going to work because people’s natures don’t change if you get me but we have to say the entire set up has looked a lot more professional with the arrival of a top manager and his staff.

We have a way to go and the midfield signings need to be bang on the money because the Kouyate/Noble axis looked more than creaky last season.

And minds are going to be very concentrated in that area of the squad at the meeting between the board, manager and Husillos which takes place on Monday afternoon.

The Lanzini situation means a similar playmaker has to be found but word is the boss wants two of the same type with insiders claiming up to five more players could be recruited.

There is no doubt that the manager’s stature – reflected in his salary –  has created a new mood among the board and player choices are his and his alone.

Husillos will be a key player from here on in identifying and clinching deals with the players he has hand-picked.

Three signings have arrived quickly but any slowdown now is unacceptable as the mood created has raised expectancy levels considerably.
