David Gold had little hesitation in handing James Collins his personal man of the match award following the draw against Everton.

He claimed it was a close call between the claret and blue bleeding-loyalist and relative newcomer Arthur Masuaku but that the pride and passion of The Ginger Pele won the day for him.

He said: “I’ve been saying for weeks that Arthur is a top top player and a serious bargain buy at £5 million, he had a really great game but Ginge was the key in not giving Lukaku a sniff – not one single opportunity to turn.

“He was absolutely magnificent over the entire 90 minutes and his passion for this club is being seen week in week out – he has to be my man of the match.”

And he added: “It was goal-less but that doesn’t alter the fact that it was among our best performances of the season against a very good team.

“It was a fantastic performance and precisely what we needed. Full credit to Havard Nortveidt too who had his best game in a Hammers short in his strongest position.

“We look in good shape and with that half an hour under his belt, Sakho – looking as strong as we have seen him – can look forward to the next week. Well done too to Slaven who got it spot on and saw every player pull it out for him.

Great performance all round and lots of plusses.”
