Stewart Downing appears to have questioned West Ham owners over the issue of the team playing more entertaining football.

The winger believes however that if the team continues to play as it did on Saturday the Hammers will finish in the top ten.

Manager Sam Allardyce has of course been instructed by the owners to play more attacking football and secure a top-half finish. But Downing claims that playing and winning in style is not always possible. He said: “You look at Tottenham and they are supposed to be in the top four and we really should’ve beaten them so all we have got to do is keep people fit.

“We have got people to come back, [Enner] Valencia came on and looked sharp, he could be a good player for us once he is up and running.

“We have to consistently play like that. At the end of the season if we are not in the top 10 we will have not hit the target the chairman wants but, us as a team, we should be in the top 10 anyway. If we are not we have failed.

“It [being more entertaining] is a statement from the chairman.

“What is entertainment? If we had played not very well and won everyone would’ve been happy – we played very well and lost and everyone is unhappy so you can’t really win at football in that way.”
