West Ham Vice-Chairman Karren Brady claims the London Stadium could still require up to 500 staff to open behind closed doors.

The claim was made during the Baroness’ Sun column in which she said “Everyone at the stadium – and even behind closed doors this is about 300-500 people – including security, staff, medical officers, players, referees and media, will have to have temperature checks, fill out health questionnaires and observe social distancing”

The former Olympic Stadium is so large the structure needs a large number of facilities management and maintenance staff, add to that groundsmen and security.

The players, medical and backroom staff could easily reach one hundred for both teams and media both TV and print would account for large numbers of people also with all games televised live.

Whether the West Ham owners and/or Brady herself would be allowed to watch in person is unknown but the Government is likely to give specific guidance limiting the number of people in a sports setting while still encouraging social distancing amongst non-playing staff.
