Everton are planning a £31million bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho in January claims the Portuguese media today.

Portuguese newspaper The Record claim Everton club directors are said to have watched Carvalho in action this season, with boss Ronald Koeman deeming him an ‘ideal’ addition to his squad. Record claim that Everton are now the front-runners for Carvalho’s signature.

The report follows a failed attempt to sign Carvalho in the summer with a war of words between the two clubs after the transfer window shut.

Sporting Lisbon claimed they received no formal bids from West Ham and later called David Sullivan a lier among other things.

Sky Sports News later revealed the content of leaked emails from David Sullivan, which confirmed they offered £22.85m for Carvalho in instalments over three years, plus add-ons.

The email said “This is to confirm that WHUFC will pay 25m Euros payable in 3 instalments over 24 months (8.333m Euros now, August 2018 and August 2019) with a 10 percent sell on. Add-ons to be agreed (eg WHU qualify for Champions League and the player making 85 percent of starts in season achieved.) These can’t just be games as he will be our record signing and we expect him to play the games. We wish to conclude this asap or we’ll be borrowing a player from PSG.”
