New Hammers keeper Lukasz Fabianski was in magnificent form for Poland yesterday but could not prevent the side finishing bottom of their group in the World Cup campaign.

The team finished with a 1-0 win over with Japan in Samara and they had ‘Fab’ to thank in part  that they went home with the victory.

They had lost  their opening two Group H fixtures to Senegal and Colombia and were already eliminated ahead of Thursday’s match.

Fabianski was brought into the teams for his 46th international appearance replacing Wojciech Szceszny for the final fixture.

And he showed great form as Adam Nawalka’s side secured victory through a superb volleyed finish from Southampton defender Jan Bednarek.

The 33-year-old made first-half saves from Yoshinori Muto, Gotoku Sakai and Takashi Usami to ensure the Europeans went in goalless at the break.

Poland then went ahead on 59 minutes when Rafal Kurzawa’s free-kick from wide on the left was well converted by  Bednarek.
