ClaretandHugh has been inviting readers to share their best Hammers memories as we bid farewell to out spiritual home – the Boleyn.

Here, follower essexirons shares a very special moment in his Irons-watching career.

28th April 1978 is a date that is engraved into my brain for my lifetime.

Not only was this my first game at the Boleyn, it was also against my brother’s team. We had to win to save our season… we didn’t, lost 0-2 and  got relegated to boot.

As soon as I was told we would be going to the game I couldn’t think of anything else, weeks went by with the excitement growing. The night before I hardly slept and couldn’t wait to get there.

These were still in the days when kids were standing on milk crates or as we were sitting on the barrier. To be honest I can only remember parts of the game itself, the goals, the tears and the much missed Emlyn Hughes winking at my brother who was bravely surrounded in thousands of Hammers wearing Liverpool red from top to toe.

We got home just in time to watch The Big Match and was able to watch again the agony of the game.

But there was comfort in seeing myself and said brother for the world to see in close up there on the screen. A memory that can never die as I can watch it any time I want as some how my brother was able to find a copy of The Big Match and uploaded it onto Youtube. (I did contact ITV before hand but they wanted £200).
