Frank McAvennie’s love affair with the Irons fans will last a lifetime.

The club legend – and on this occasion the word is well justified – paraded with members of the fabulous squad of 1985-86 ahead of Monday night’s game against Newcastle.

And ClaretandHugh’s blogger is the first of them to publicly thank the fans who gave him, Tony Cottee, Phil Parkes, Paul Goddard, Steve Potts among others, such a great Boleyn welcome.

It was a truly emotional occasion as the the team who finished in the club’s highest ever league position – third behind Liverpool and Everton – paraded before the Claret and Blue Army.

Frank told ClaretandHugh that the first love of his life will always be the Irons despite growing up and continuing to follow his boyhood club Celtic.

And the highlight of his evening on Monday was meeting up with his former strike partner Tony Cottee who has remained a friend over the last 30 years.

He said: It’s always a pleasure to meet up with Tony – the years simply melt away.”

But the fans are always the first thing on his mind and he later tweeted: “Just arrived in Glasgow after a great couple days in London. Thanks to all the fans for a great reception
