The co-chairman was in jovial mood as he spoke of the difficulties his manager faces in picking a team for the match against Newcastle United on Monday night adding: “He asked for various players and we got them all. Slaven  deserves the problem!”

Gold admits he has warmed to his new boss in a big way and believes he could remain with the club manager for a long time into the future.

Speaking exclusively to ClaretandHugh he said: “He’s 47. When someone reaches their 60s there’s a natural end to things but Slaven could be here for many years to come.

“I like the man very much. Sometimes you meet people and there’s a natural chemistry – this is one of those occasions.

He even thanked me for the transfer window which is the first time in 23 years a manager has done so. He’s a proper man and I believe he will be a top manager for us.

“We are all fascinated to see what team he puts out on Monday but one thing is certain, we will have the strongest bench we’ve seen at West Ham in many years.

“I wouldn’t even start to speculate but I’m sure he has some headaches on that front” and he laughed: “He deserves them.”.
