West Ham became the fourth biggest spenders in the transfer window and in some respects that told a tale with which maybe we would prefer to be associated.

Despite the view of the club’s critics that we should spend like crazy in January two of the clubs who spent more  are struggling in a big way confirming that it’s the lowly teams that get involved in panic buying.

The idea that big clubs spend big money at this time of the year simply isn’t true – on this occasion anyway – and a re-think among some who believe otherwise may be required.

The  Hammers – having spent £18 million came in behind Crystal Palace  (18th), Everton (7th) and Leicester City (16th)

Some have been precitably critical of the club for their spend on the basis that Andy Carroll may get injured give his track record record but David Gold hit back at those on Twitter who appear to be blaming him and the club at large.

One follower said; “Well done on a successful transfer deadline day. Should Carroll get injured, we’re screwed. Well played!”

Gold responded: “I understand your concerns and your sarcasm but the manager doesn’t agree with you. It’s all a matter of opinions. dg
