Hammers in Gomez cliffhanger

West Ham’s hopes of signing Maxi Gomez at around half price from Celta Vigo are hanging in the balance as the Spanish season heads towards its end.

Vigo are currently in 14th place in the 20 team table but on the same points as 15th, 16th and 17th placed outfits Levante, Girona and Real Valladolid.

And with a clash at the weekend against Barcelona there’s a strong possibility of them slipping beneath all three of their nearest rivals.

They then go into two end of season games against seventh place Athletic Bilbao away and finish their campaign against second off bottom Rayo Vallecano who could already have been relegated at home.

It’s a cliffhanger for the Hammers who could pay either €42 million of the club stay up as per his contract clause but the buy out drops to £22 million should they be relegated.

Gomez has been the priority target since the winter when talks aimed at buying the player and loaning him back to the Spanish club until the end of the season broke down.
