Huge stakes for Sunday now

West Ham simply have to beat Brentford on Sunday if they want to remain in the Champions League race after Saturday’s results.

It appeared as though the Irons had been given a major boost after Everton beat Manchester United in the early kick-off, and Arsenal were then beaten at home by Brighton in one of the 3pm kick-offs.

However, Spurs took advantage of those slip-ups later on, thumping Aston Villa 4-0 to take a firm grip on the top-four race.

The results mean that the Hammers are sixth before the clash with the Bees, six points behind Spurs.

After tomorrow’s game, the Irons will have also played a game more than Tottenham so there really is no room for error, and there cannot be a repeat of the reverse fixture, when Brentford won 2-1 at the London Stadium.

If the Irons do win tomorrow, they will leapfrog Arsenal on goal difference, while ramping up the pressure on Antonio Conte’s side.

The pressure’s on.
