Leroy’s own playing days ended in his late 20s with a degenerative knee injury and he played in pain for much of his career with the final five years being “absolute agony”.
He said: “I don’t think anybody outside of a few will know about any injury problems to particular players, and it’s really best not to go there if there’s any uncertainty.
“David is known as a man who says what he thinks. But I reckon if he could go back he wouldn’t go near the subject again. It’s all best forgotten I think.”
