The referee of the Europa League first leg between West Ham and Lyon was banned from officiating for six months after allegations of match fixing.

Felix Zwayer turned in one of the most controversial refereeing displays of the season last week as the Hammers drew 1-1 with the French club.

Aaron Cresswell was sent off just before half-time for bringing down Mousa Dembele when the last man, even though replays suggested that there was only a light touch, while Dembele actually winked after the decision.

Hammers boss David Moyes was particularly angry after the decision and was shown a yellow card for his protests.

It has now emerged, though, that Zwayer actually has a chequered history in the sport and was banned by the German FA in 2005 after helping another official fix a game involving Wuppertaler SV.

He was given £250 to do so and his ban was kept secret for six months, per The Daily Star.

He has now ascended to refereeing European games and Bundesliga matches, drawing attention again after Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham slammed his decision-making when they faced Bayern Munich.
