ClaretandHugh understands that Marseilles have finally come back with a new offer for Dimitri Payet.

The French club have edged their offer – the third – up to close on £25 million but the Irons are still holding out for £30 minimum.

It is becoming more likely that a deal will be done than not as negotiations continue although Marseilles believe they remain in the driving seat as the only club the player will apparently join.

There’s little question, however, that whilst the Hammers urgently want rid of the Frenchman with the manager allegedly pushing for early closure on the issue, they see £30 million as the lowest possible benchmark price.

However, there is nothing certain as the club feels cheated by the backdrop to the negotiations are being conducted with the French club getting a player who under other circumstances would cost closer to £40-£45 million.

With the situation as it is, there’s little question talks are likely to go right down to he final day of the window with the Irons keeping the pressure on for the right deal
