Planning permission has been submitted to erect four large illuminated sign reading “West Ham United” with letters 3 metres high at the former Olympic Stadium. Each new sign will stretch over 47 metres in length.

The application submitted in February seeks consent for four mounted West Ham United signs  as part of the Olympic Stadium Transformation works. The application says the signs will act as navigational aids to approaching spectators and visitors announcing the stadium as the home of the football club. The signs will be located on each ‘side’ of the stadium. Individually, the signs measure 3m in height and run 47.70m around the face of the elevations. The signs will be internally illuminated and attached on mounting rails, painted white. During the football season, the signs will only be lit from 9am -10.30pm on match days. During the off-season the signs might be concealed or hidden during certain events which require clean stadium status such as the World Athletics Championships 2017. They will not be illuminated during the off-football-season.

The application says it does not seek to materially alter the appearance of the stadium serving simply to state the identity of the primary concessionaire. As the new home of the West Ham United this is important to identify the club, the fans, visitors and the local community.
