Sky Pundit Paul Merson has said he would have picked Mark Noble for England saying he has been the best midfielder in the country this season. Speaking in his column in the Daily Star Merson says:

“Surprise packages win tournaments. Alli and Barkley are like that. Yes teams will know all about them. But they won’t have played against them.

To be honest, I would have picked West Ham’s Mark Noble in the squad.

He has been the best midfield player in the country this season so I hope Roy Hodgson called him and told him he’s not in the plans.

That happened to me once. We’d just beaten Greece 5-0 and Terry Venables called to tell me I wouldn’t be selected.

It’s not a problem if you know. Roy’s picked Danny Drinkwater instead, but I wouldn’t play him against Germany.

We should play our best team. The one that will start the tournament.”
