Mirror man Darren Lewis – a friend of ClaretandHugh – has today sent us this update on the Carlos Bacca situation in a short blog for the site. And he makes a point on behalf of the owners declaring: “There are more than a few clubs’ fans that wouldn’t mind a smidgin of the willingness to speak to them that the Davids, Gold and Sullivan, have.”

We may have breakthrough.

After what seems like an age of negotiations and a lifetime since last season, West Ham appear hopeful of signing a new striker.

Carlos Bacca has indicated that (with neither Arsenal nor Atletico Madrid likely to provide him with the better offer he was looking for) he may be prepared to accept the package on offer to move to east London.

His attitude isn’t a slight on West Ham. It is a sign of the times. The Irons are not in the Champions League. Sevilla are.

Bacca is keen on a move but it is natural that his first options would be clubs also playing at the elite level of club football.

Should he finalise a move to the Olympic stadium the Hammers will be signing a striker of proven class after his goals in Belgium, Spain and Italy.

He may be 29 but so too is Jamie Vardy, another player West Ham would have taken and one that Arsenal tried to sign this summer.

Bacca is a winner, with two Europa Leagues under his belt from his time at Sevilla.

He would also appear to vindicate the perseverance of the Hammers’ board despite criticism of their transparency.

There are more than a few clubs’ fans that wouldn’t mind a smidgin of the willingness to speak to them that the Davids, Gold and Sullivan, have.

Let’s hope the approach has a happy ending.
