Moyes admits he beat himself up for days

Who would be a manager when you get it completely wrong especially when you have every reason to believe the decision you have made is spot on!

The fact that it in fact goes so wrong and every pundit in the country calls you for it is merely a case of them being wise after an event which would probably have seen them do the same only makes it worse.

Who would have believed that when Mark Noble was thrown on to take a penalty in the closing seconds of the match against Manchester United at the London Stadium he would miss from the spot and we finished losing the game 2-1.

He has one of the best spot kick records in the country and there were few who weren’t happy to see him arrive off the bench to take that one.

Instead, De Gea made a save and we missed out on a point our performance seriously deserved and Moyes was depressed for days afterwards.

He told reporters: ” Mark Noble has got one of the best goal scoring percentages of any player in Europe from the penalty spot, so the decision to bring him on was a big call, it really was.

I didn’t enjoy my own company for a few days after it because I beat myself up about it, but when you’re a football manager you have to make decisions. Sometimes you get them right and sometimes you get them wrong.

On the day, I got this one wrong, but I still think the real reasons for doing it were the right ones, and if we’re being fair, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been playing out of his skin this season and made a great penalty save that day.

I was thinking we’d get a draw out of it right at the end, but on the day it didn’t quite work.”
