David Moyes has opened the door to a shock deal to sign Ross Barkley after his release from Chelsea.

The former England international has left the Blues by mutual consent after failing to make any type of breakthrough into the first-team following his move from Everton.

He endured a stop-start spell at Chelsea and while he made 100 appearances in total, he only made 29 starts in the Premier League.

Moyes gave Barkley his debut at Goodison Park and it now appears that he could be an option for the Irons before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

The Irons have added to their attacking midfield ranks by signing Lucas Paqueta from Lyon in a club-record deal.

But Moyes has refused to rule out the option of signing the 28-year-old, who has won 33 caps for England, on a free transfer.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s London derby against Spurs in his weekly press conference, as per Football.London, the Irons boss said: “I would never rule anybody out but I’ve got to say on Ross, I gave him his debut at 16 and he’s had a really good career.

“He’s played for England and played for big clubs. If it is not us, I wish him well wherever he does go.

“I think sometimes when you are in this situation, you have got maybe a little bit more to prove because you have to come back and show people exactly what you are.”
