Moyes: We gave the game back to Leeds

David Moyes insists West Ham gave the game back to Leeds United after their 2-2 draw at Elland Road.

The two clubs went head-to-head on Wednesday in what looked like a must-win game for both sides.

As a result, both sides desperately tried to win the game, with Wilfried Gnonto opening the scoring before Lucas Paqueta equalised from the penalty spot.

Gianluca Scamacca then gave the Irons the lead with a brilliant strike from range that kissed the post on its way in, but the Hammers were unable to see out their lead and take all three points.

Rodrigo equalised with 20 minutes left and, while both teams had chances to score before the final whistle, the points were ultimately shared at Elland Road.

And Moyes was disappointed to see the Irons give away the initiative to Jesse Marsch’s side; West Ham have remained 17th in the table, level on points with Everton but with a better goal difference.

Speaking to Football.London, Moyes said: “Okay, we fought hard. I thought it was a sort of good old fashioned game at times. I thought when we went 2-1 up we would go on and win the game and actually, if anything, we gave the game back to Leeds United.

“We shouldn’t have done it. I thought after we got the second goal, we then started to make mistakes with the ball and not doing things as well as we should have done. We rode a wee bit of luck, but I thought we deserved it at times.

“I just felt that we had to control the game a bit better when we went 2-1 up than we did. We had a little spell but we just gave away a couple of stupid passes and got caught in a couple of defensive mistakes, which obviously let them back into the game.”
