Moyes: We were close to signing Everton ace

David Moyes admits West Ham were close to signing Amadou Onana before he joined Everton.

The midfielder sealed a £33m move to Goodison Park from Lille in the summer transfer window.

The Hammers had tracked Onana and were interested in securing his signature.

And Moyes has now confirmed that the Irons went close to bringing him in before he went to Merseyside.

He told reporters: “We were close. It was just one of the periods of the transfer window where I have got to say it was very stressful and difficult to get things done and this was one of the periods where we just couldn’t quite get this one over the line.

“We were looking to bring him in. He’s an up and coming player and for long periods, we thought we would have got him but it didn’t quite work and he ended up at Everton.”

The Hammers eventually signed Lucas Paqueta instead.
