West Ham tonight appear to be pushing the art of the possible to its most extreme limits after confirming widely publicised reports  they have launched a bid for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

With just under over a day of the transfer window left they are hoping to lure the 22 year old Uruguayan to the London Stadium despite him being understood to have a £100 million buy-out clause in his contract.

The news broke earlier this evening and CandH were reluctant to run it given the apparent release clause, time left to clinch a deal and the fact he has a current contract until 2025 anyway.

However, the Hammers  – via a top source admitted when we declared it to surely be fantasy – that the Hammers were indeed trying to get the deal done.

Nunez has scored 18 goals in 24 games this season with three coming in the Champions League and the remainder in the Portuguese League.

He is currently in South America which makes things even more difficult in terms of getting a deal done but our source said: “We are trying.”

We’d ne amazed if a deal gets done.
